I think he finally realized that he is going to pay for what he did.” According to Corbin, this man is from Africa, but living in Atlanta, Georgia. The Huron County Sheriff’s Office and the FBI were able to use this con artist and link him to several other people who were being financially exploited. All lived outside of Huron County. The scammer’s accounts have since been frozen, thanks to their exceptional detective work. Detective Sergeant Ted Evans, explained the majority of Prince A. Young’s work was romance scams. They had a guy who would be the primary communicator via the internet or telephone calls. Then there would be other people in place to be ‘runners’ to receive the money. Despite the arrest and the indictment, the 60+ year old victim was truly in love with the man in her virtual relationship. In fact, she tried to make contact with him after the indictment. Despite the Huron County Sheriff telling her to cease any further communication with the romance scammer, she still wanted to talk to him. Detective Evans said, based on his experience with other romance scam victims, “They believe the relationship is absolutely real and their life is consumed by it.” “Typically, romance scam artists exploit their victims by asking for smaller amounts of money, first. If they get it, they will ask again. Slowly the scammers increase the amount of money they are asking for.” Although this victim was told to use Western Union, Evans said, “There are cases when the victims are asked to do strange things, like, purchase a teddy bear and put the money in a teddy bear and send it in the mail; or go to the store and buy gift cards. The victim is told to send or call the scam artist with the numbers on the gift cards. If this story sounds familiar and you think you are a victim of a scam, report it!
