Infant incontinence is normal. Adult incontinence is not part of normal aging. There is something causing this condition. That “something” is not your age. Urinary incontinence is more prevalent, than bowel incontinence. However, “Incontinence is more common than people realize,” said Dr. Visci. He has treated patients in their 30’s. Most, are age 50 and older. “I’m surprised that they were prepared to live the rest of their life with incontinence,” he said. Dr. Rick Visci, treats adults of all ages living with bladder and / or bowel incontinence. It is an outpatient procedure, called “Interstim.” It is covered by Medicare. Before, undergoing the procedure, Dr. Visci will perform an “office trial” to see if the procedure is likely to work for the patient. The patient keeps a written log for three days, to track how frequently It’s Not Normal Aging he/she uses the bathroom. At the doctor’s office, a temporary wire about the diameter of a hair, is taped to the patient’s buttock and a device is clipped to the patient’s belt. The device is worn for five days. If there is improved bladder/bowel control the patient is appropriate for the “Interstim” outpatient procedure. According to Dr. Visci, “Interstim is effective 70% of the time for bladder control. It is 90% effective for fecal incontinence.” The procedure for implanting the Interstim device is easy and takes 30 to 40 minutes.
