To qualify for the exemption, you must be: • An Ohio resident who is at least 65 years old or under 65 on permanent disability; • Be named on the deed to the property and live there as your primary residence as of January 1 of the year you are applying for the exemption; • Have a household adjusted gross income of $32,800 or less (in 2018) according to Line 3 of your Ohio Income tax form. • There are special considerations for 100% disabled veterans as well. • You may apply for the exemption any time during the year (no deadline). The savings from the exemption varies each year depending on tax rates, but typically a homeowner can save $300-$400 per year. Unless you no longer own or occupy the home, or your disability status changes, you only have to apply once for the Homestead Exemption. Property owners who were receiving the Homestead Exemption in Ohio in 2014 or in prior years do not have to meet an income requirement. These homeowners may remain on the Homestead Exemption without meeting income guidelines. Applications are available at the Erie County Auditor’s Office and website. To have an application mailed to you or if you need help completing the application, please call Jenny Capizzi at the Erie County Auditor’s Office at 419-627-7523 or 419-627-7746. 16 Serving Our Seniors is here when you need help . 419-624-1856 800-564-1856
