Kiu Sanders is 84 and looks twenty years younger. When asked her secret to looking so young, Kiu replies, “I’m living a grand life and the people in my life help.” She is actively engaged in the community, works at maintaining her health, and is innovative in growing her circle of friends and acquaintances. Kiu volunteers delivering meals to residents in Sandusky two days a week. The Erie County Senior Center and Serving Our Seniors work in partnership providing an average of 300 meals a day to older adults throughout Erie County. “My teacher colleagues recruited me to deliver meals. I’m so glad they did. I love doing this. It makes you feel good when you do something to help other people.” She keeps fit by lifting weights at a gym three days a week. “You have to be steadfast and challenge yourself. You can’t just show up one time and not go for a week or two. I started lifting 7 lb. weights, but when that became too easy, I increased to 10 lb. weights.” Kiu is also an avid swimmer. She volunteers with residents who live at Parkvue Community where she teaches an aquatic exercise program. In exchange, she’s able to swim laps in the pool. Her routine includes swimming for 30 minutes and then leading her water exercise class. “The class I teach isn’t large, but those who come seem to really enjoy it.” Kiu Sanders loading her car with Meals On Wheels lunches Successful Aging A Grand Attitude Towards Life www.servingourseniors.org 21 Find us on
