The Tree? between Bill and Sean is Sean struggles with “buyer’s remorse.” As for Bill… “I figure once you made your decision - go on with it.” Bill is a DIY kind of guy and Sean’s superpower is assembling Ikea. Other than Ikea, Sean will pay to have things fixed. Bill has always been clean shaven, Sean has a beard. Bill enjoys doing laundry and shopping and Sean does not like doing either one. Bill and Sean are not only similar in appearance, but also in personality and character – like father, like son. HAPPY FATHER’S DAY! Meet Sue Van Barg, age 70 and her daughter, Holly Radloff. Sue has lived in Sandusky/Perkins Twp area her whole life. She worked outside of the home as a nurse for 40 years, in addition to being a wife and a mother. Married for 47 years to Earl Van Barg, she and her late husband have one son Michael, one daughter and a 7 year old one grandson, Liam. Today, Sue volunteers at the hospital and the Sandusky State Theater. She enjoys baking and will bake something once a week and take it to Stein Hospice. For fun, she goes to Cedar Point with Liam. Holly is 42 years old and has also lived in the Sandusky/Perkins area her whole life. She has been married ten years to Dustin and are the proud parents of Sue’s only grandson. Holly works full time as a merchandiser for Sam’s Club. When she is not working, she says she likes to do as little as possible. “I like staying at home. I’m a home-body.” Not only does Sue and her daughter look-alike, Sue will be the first to tell you that the older she becomes the more she looks like her mother, Lauretta Walborn. So how far does the apple from the tree for these two ladies? Here is what they had to say: Personality: Both say they are quiet and reserved until they get to know the person. Each describe themselves as being strong-willed, tend to worry and over-react. Philosophy on Aging/Life Sue: “Aging is not for sissies. Enjoy every day and remember there are no guarantees.” Holly: “Seize the moment and take the chance. God doesn’t give us more than we can handle.” How they are alike: In their childhood, they both played the flute. As adults they like diet pop, coffee, travel, watching TV. Both met their husbands through the intentional efforts of other people. For Sue, it was the “Avon Lady” who fixed her up with her husband-to-be. “Earl proposed to me when I was suffering from chicken pox. I looked awful. If he still wanted to marry me when I looked like this, I knew he had to love me,” she said as she laughed. Holly met her husband when one of her friends called her at home one evening. The friend told her, “Get over here! I’m at a bar and I met your future husband. If you don’t come out, I’m bringing him to your birthday.” 13 years later Holly, Dustin and Liam are one happy family. How they are different: Sue is a shopper and a saver of “stuff”. Holly does not like shopping and has no problem throwing things away. Holly prefers cooking over baking and Sue enjoys baking over cooking. Sue likes meat, Holly likes sushi. Sue appreciates the love and support that is shared and the various ways they are able to be there for each other. For this mother and daughter, motherhood is a priceless gift that money cannot buy. HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY! 7
