Meet Tom, an Erie County resident.
He worked for Sandusky Dressed
Beef and had dental insurance until
they closed in 1995. He is not afraid
of the dentist and would use dental
care when he had the insurance. It
was the cost that prevented him from
receiving dental care.
After retirement he learned that Medicare does not cover
dental care. At age 70 his teeth started breaking off
when eating food. To treat the pain he would use an over
the counter product called Ora-jel. With time, the pain
eventually subsided and somehow he coped with having
broken teeth.
In 2012, Serving Our Seniors
helped Tom afford a dentist
to extract four teeth. This
year, through Serving Our
Seniors’ Denture Project
he was able to afford a
partial denture. Today he
is enjoying how much
easier it is to eat. He truly
appreciates Serving Our
Seniors and its dental
and denture projects. His
advice to readers, “Poor
dental care does affect
your health”.
Oral Health Care
and Later Life
Meet Erie County resident, Barbara,
age 69. Until 2013 she had the same
upper denture since 1971. In 2001 she
was able to afford a lower denture.
She heard about Serving Our Seniors’
Denture Care Project in the newspaper
two years ago. She had been on the
waiting list for her denture care since
she read about it.
Until she received this treatment in October, Barbara
ate with an upper denture that was 42 years old and a
lower denture that was 11 years old. They didn’t ft and
would create a sore in her mouth from wearing them.
Her teeth did not come together in order to chew solid
food, i.e., meat. To remedy
this problem, she would cut
the meat into small pieces
so she could swallow it
without chewing. Today,
she is smiling and able
to eat normally. She truly
appreciates the care
she received and has a
healthier, higher quality
of life because of Serving
Our Seniors and the
Denture Project.
