She will tell you, it didn’t just happen. She had a transition plan. “I didn’t retire from something. I was retiring to something,” she said. “I planned how I was going to spend my time practicing my faith, spend more time with family, work on my fitness and have fun.” After retirement, Johnnie and her husband Kris, started helping The Chapel, by providing financial discipleship. She stays in contact with her adult children, letting them know she is there to lift their spirits and be a source of encouragement, as Covid-19 is a stress in their lives, too. Since the 1990’s, yoga has been a part of Johnnie’s She Planned Retirement to Age Well fitness and fun. She practices three to five times a week and teaches yoga, too. The style is Vinyasa Flow, which involves linking breath with movement through poses. This can build strength and improve balance. Yinn Yoga is her alternative, holding poses for a longer period. This consists of deep stretching and the benefit is improved flexibility. Johnnie practices a Christian prayer-oriented meditation, too. “This helps me set a positive tone for the day or reset a difficult day,” she said. Her advice to others who are struggling with anxiety and depression during the Covid-19 pandemic, “Turn off the negative TV. Too much of anything is just too much. Wake up every day and tell yourself you are going to do one positive thing for yourself, today, and one positive thing for your family (or friend) – then do it.” Johnnie doing a yoga pose known as “Tree”.
