He said, “There are two things you need to race a car. One is eyesight and the other is reflexes. I’ve still got both of them.” He credits Lasik surgery for his eyesight. He doesn’t wear glasses and has no difficulty reading small print. When I asked him what he does to maintain his reflexes, he said, “Nothing.” Then he said, “Remember, I stay very active.” He retired from Open Wheel race car driving in 2020. Not because he could no longer race/drive. “It was too much work to get the car ready for the race track. The work got to be more than the fun.” Before he hung up his racing keys, he was inducted into two Racing Halls of Fame. In 2012 he was inducted into the Fremont Racing Hall of Fame for Race Car Owner, Six Championships in a Row. In 2020, he was inducted into the Sandusky Speedway Hall of Fame for the oldest, active driver and for winning a Feature Race (aka “The Best of the Best”) at age 90 years old. He chuckled and said, “I go to bars and Jolly Donuts.” He met his friends Chip and Shelly Chesbro at Jolly Donuts, a donut shop in Perkins Township. Chip is 30 years younger than Grover and Shelly is 38 years his junior. He said his hobby of car racing has helped to expand his circle of friends, too. Exercise: When it comes to exercise Grover said, “I use to walk, but then it started to hurt my hip, so I stopped.” We both broke out in laughter after this statement was made. Then he said, “But I stay active. I’m always doing something. Until two years ago, I used to push mow my own lawn. Then my son- in-law gave me a riding lawn mower. Grover says he can still do the jitter bug and goes dancing at the American Legion, VFW and Am-Vets. HE’S AN ANOMALY continued on page 9 Grover with his model plane. Race win at Attica Raceway Park.
