Dr. Marsha Cooper, MD: In celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, January 16, 2023 it is fitting to celebrate Sandusky’s first female, African-American physician, Dr. Marsha Cooper, who was born in 1954. The year the Supreme Court ruled, unanimously, that racial segregation of children in public schools was unconstitutional. (Brown vs. Board of Education). Dr. Cooper grew up in Philadelphia, PA, graduated from Tulane University School of Medicine and started her career working in emergency medicine in Norwalk, Ohio in 1985. Later, she moved to Sandusky to start her own practice. Today she is works outside of Sandusky in locations where there are physician shortages. I asked her how Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr’s leadership and sacrifice influenced her ability to dream and achieve her dreams. She was quick to point-out it was not Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., alone. It was her parents, who embraced the teachings of Dr. King, along with other brave and caring people, who fought for her right to achieve her potential.
