Unfortunately, that has changed. Oddly enough, housing prices and rents started to skyrocket with the Covid pandemic. To qualify for a HUD voucher or to live at a metro public housing apartment building, the annual gross income cannot exceed $27,450.00 for a household of one (1) or $31,350.00 for a household of two (2). Generally speaking, if one is fortunate to have the voucher or public housing, the tenant pays 30% of their gross monthly income for rent. For example, one who earns $2,000.00/month, rent is $600.00/month. For Erie County, it is estimated that it could take over a year to process all the applications that are currently eligible for a voucher. If one cannot get a voucher or subsidized housing, the retiree must pay market rate rent, which ranges from $800.00/ month to $1,500.00/month. Affordable housing is now a problem for many more retirees. Serving Our Seniors has a dream and is planning to be a catalyst for the development of modestly-sized, affordable housing for retirees in need. Are you an Erie County resident, age 60+ and concerned about keeping a roof over your head, now or in the future? Contact Serving Our Seniors at 419-624-1856 or e-mail Mail@ServingOurSeniors.org . Tell us your first name, phone number and why you are interested in affordable, rental housing. We will call you the first week in February 2023 to learn from what you have to tell us. Then we will work to spark a change that supports the development of affordable, rental housing for older adults. Mark Your Calendars! Plan to attend Serving Our Seniors Sonny & Cher Show.
