Erie County Commissioner, Pat Shenigo and his family have been strong supporters to find a cure for Alzheimer’s disease. Pat lost his father and his mother to the disease. “My father had Frontotemporal Dementia and my mother had the Alzheimer’s type,” he said. Today, Pat and Cam’s daughter, Julianne Smith, Chairs the Erie Shores Walk Committee, which is raising money for a cure. Pat said, he and his family visited his parents frequently. Julianne recalls, coming home from college and would go with the family to visit her grandparents. She could see how her grandparents were changing with time as their memories became more impaired by their conditions. The Walk to End Alzheimer’s Disease Paige Doster, an Erie County resident, said her father lived with and died from complications of Alzheimer’s disease. Today, she is a Champion to End Alzheimer’s Disease. For the last five years, Paige has garnered the support of her friends and family, then formed a Walk Team. She has raised the most money for the Erie Shores Walk to End Alzheimer’s disease. Until there is a cure, the Alzheimer’s Association – NW Ohio Chapter, offers Care Consultation. Dakota Stone, Program Coordinator , wants people to know she is here to talk with those diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease or to their family members. She coaches those she talks with on their individualized situation. Most commonly, a caller asks, “Why the person can do one task earlier in the day and are unable to do the same task, later, in the same day?” Another common question is, “Why can he/ she do one simple task, but can’t do the other task, which is just as simple?” Dakota explains, “This disease effects everyone differently, which is why we are here to talk.” The Alzheimer’s Helpline (1-800-272-3900) can be called anytime of the day.
