Today’s seniors are outliving their ability to drive safely by an average of 7-10 years, yet only 17% of older drivers report ever talking with a family member or physician about driving safety. A report by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety indicates that most often the conversation only takes place after an accident or traffic infraction has occurred ( AAA Magazine , January 2019). The Cleveland Clinic offers an Adult Driver Evaluation and Rehabilitation Program to assess and treat physical conditions that impair safe driving. The program aims to help individuals return to independent driving, for as long as possible. All of us will experience physical changes to our body as we age. Over time, these changes may impact our ability to drive safely. Those who detect these changes and seek treatment are often able to extend their ability to drive safely longer. Please join us on Tuesday, August 20, 2019 for dinner and a forum entitled, “Aging & Driving: What You Ought to Know To Keep Your Keys Longer.” The forum panel includes Dr. Luke Kim, MD, Cleveland Clinic; Christina Duncan, Occupational Therapist, Cleveland Clinic Adult Driver and Rehabilitation; and a representative from the Ohio State Patrol. Immediately after the forum, all guests are invited to experience the Sandusky Transit System bus stop tour. Each bus will have a “Mobility Manager” to explain how the bus routes work. The Mobility Manager is available, by appointment, to ride the bus with you until you are comfortable using the bus by yourself. The dinner and forum will be held at the Ten Fifty Eight Event Center, Sandusky Plaza, 1058 Cleveland Road, Sandusky. Doors open at 3:30 p.m. with dinner served at 4:00 p.m. To reserve your seat, a $10.00 refundable deposit is required. The deposit must be received by August 10, payable to Serving Our Seniors. Those who attend and experience the transit system will receive their refund following the bus stop tour. For more information, please call 419-624-1856.
