Smoking as a teenager was the social norm the 1950’s and 1960’s. A local resident and Vietnam Veteran, Tom, who wishes to remain out of the spotlight, shared how he became a non-smoker. He hopes his story will inspire others to quit smoking. Tom said, “I tried to quit and failed several times. I even tried hypnotism. That didn’t work for me. On my fourth and final attempt, I just decided I’m not going to let it beat me. Whenever I would think about having a cigarette, I would tell myself, ‘No, I’m not going to have one. I’m not going let this cigarette beat me. I’m going to beat it.’ That’s what I would do every time I wanted a cigarette.” At the age of 50, he had become a non-smoker. It took over a year and a half before the urge for a cigarette left him. Today he enjoys a restored sense of smell and taste. Quitting had other benefits. At age Quit Smoking: Do Yourself a Favor 70 he was diagnosed with lung cancer due to agent orange and he had half of his left lung removed. “I know, had I not quit when I did, I would not have the lung capacity I needed to recover. I’m not on oxygen and I’m living a normal life. I don’t believe I would be here, today, if I was still smoking.” Tom is unique. He quit by pure determination.
