Serving Our Seniors Magazine April - June 2023
Using food for prevention and treatment of disease is an idea that has been around for many years. New information comes out every day showing that a healthy diet can help people achieve and maintain good health. We recognize that it can be difficult to purchase healthy foods with today’s increasing grocery prices, and that it can also be difficult to know what type of foods to eat to help improve your health. This is why Family Health Services has created a Food Is Medicine Program. During this program you will receive two boxes of free food per month (one at your appointment with the dietitian and one at the appointment with your provider) including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and other healthy options, meet with your Primary Care Provider and a Registered Dietitian once a month, and have the opportunity to ask questions about food, monitor your chronic health conditions, and be provided with resources. The food boxes are stored in a high-tech refrigerated locker system that you are able to access with a personalized code. Each box provides you with healthy food individualized towards your specific needs, along with sample recipes to try. Are you 18 years or older with a chronic health condition like hypertension, obesity, diabetes, etc.? Have you ever worried about your ability to access fresh, healthy food due to cost? Do you see a Primary Care Provider at Family Health Services, or are you willing to establish services with one? Are you interested in making positive changes to your diet to help improve your health? If you answered yes to these questions and are interested in being contacted about the program, call Leslie Johnson at 419-219-4734 to start the process of using Food as Medicine today!
