Herman Robinson, recently made a significant donation to Serving Our Seniors’ “Piggy Bank Fund.” He would like to challenge other organizations to do the same, because it is such an innovative way to keep small social problems small and treats people with the dignity they deserve. This is a “pot of money” funded by individual donors who want their gift to have a lasting impact, while perpetually solving pressing problems faced by older adults of Erie County. The Piggy Bank Fund: An innovative way to solve problems in later life The Piggy Bank Fund loans up to $400.00 to resolve an important need for maintaining the independence of an Erie County older adult. For example, the Piggy Bank Fund helped an older adult whose roommate moved out without notice. She could afford the apartment, but when the roommate moved out without notice, she couldn’t come up with the cash in time to pay the rent. Serving Our Seniors loaned her the difference. The money was repaid, on the honor system, with no interest being charged. She repaid The Piggy Bank Fund $25.00 a month. In 10 months, Serving Our Seniors’ Piggy Bank Fund had $250.00 repaid and used it to help the next Erie County older adult with a pressing problem. We are grateful to all of the donors of The Piggy Bank Fund, which started in 2015. Serving Our Seniors has helped 28 older adults with 30 loans amounting to $6,260.00. 20 have repaid on the honor system (no invoices are sent), two are still repaying, two have passed away before the amount could be repaid and six people did not repay. 23
