Erie County resident, Helen Louise Welshon Piper celebrated her 103rd
birthday on February 6, 2015. She was born in Avon Lake, Ohio on February
6, 1912. She had three sisters. She was the middle girl. Her family moved
to Milan, Ohio when she was quite young and lived there until she married
Elsworth Lee Piper. Elsworth passed away in 2000.
Her father was the town electrician. He strung all the lights around Milan. Her
mother was a practical nurse and at times on call to live-in and care for her
patients. They were a thrifty family and nothing went to waste or was thrown
away. A mantra my mother still lives with.
About five years ago Helen moved to Dayton. Jim and I joined her after
we sold our condo. She lives in a senior complex. Her health is very
good and she still likes to “do it her way”. She remains an ambitious
woman at 103. When I go to see her, she always asks me to find
her a job. She listens to music, watches TV and takes part in
activities. She would love to hear from her friends in Sandusky.
