Sandusky Eagles Gives to Serving
Our Seniors’ Piggy Bank Fund
Thanks to the Sandusky Eagles, Serving Our Seniors is
able to be innovative with $1,000.00 donated dollars. It is
used to address important matters affecting the lives of
older adults, when no other agency can help. These are
not problems of an urgent nature, yet left unaddressed,
compromise one’s ability to maintain their independence
and/or quality of life.
This social innovation is Serving Our Seniors’
“Piggy
Bank Fund”
. It has helped Erie County residents,
ages 60+, who were out of money at the time that their
problem occurred, but had the ability to pay back the
Piggy Bank Fund if the amount of the repayment was
made to fit their budget.
Since the Piggy Bank Fund’s inception, Serving Our
Seniors has been able to assist four senior citizens. Here
are two examples:
• A senior citizen had too many items in the apartment.
The landlord was going to issue an eviction notice. The
older adult didn’t have the money to move the items in a
timely manner. Serving Our Senior paid for the moving
of the items and the eviction was prevented. The Piggy
Bank Fund was repaid six months later.
• A senior citizen was on the verge of being evicted
for an unclean apartment. He did not own a vacuum
cleaner, nor did he have disposable income to purchase
a vacuum cleaner. Serving Our Seniors bought him a
vacuum cleaner and his eviction was avoided. He repaid
the Piggy Bank Fund in six months.
For the donor it is gratifying to see that those who
receive assistance are also taking personal responsibility
to give back, so the next person can be helped. With
time, we will determine if this is an effective, just and
sustainable solution for unique social problems.
Tim Wrenn:
He’ll Drive Anything
Serving Our Seniors’ Volunteer, Tim Wrenn, stopped by
the office with his friend, Ed “Chip” Hessler. He arrived
driving Clarabell, his 1913 Ford Model T, touring car. He
is proud to share that Clarabell was born on April 22, 1913,
at 2 pm in the afternoon.
We asked Tim, “How fast will this baby go?” He said he
drives it at 30 to 35 mph. “If you push her, she can go as
fast as 40 -45 mph, but I try not to do that.”
Tim has been a car enthusiast since he was 20-something
years old. He became an active car enthusiast in 2011,
after he retired. In addition, to belonging to the Ford Model
T Club of America and local the Car Coddlers Club, he
gives of his time to drive Serving Our Seniors clients to
their out of town health care appointments. (Don’t worry,
he doesn’t pick up clients using “Clarabell”.)
Today, Tim gives at least one day per month as a
volunteer driver. He is not obligated to a particular day.
He prefers to have the latitude to be spontaneous about
accepting a trip request. We simply call him when we know
we will need a driver. If he can do it, he will tell us he will
drive the trip. If he has other plans, he politely declines the
opportunity. No harm done. We just move on down the list
and ask another volunteer.
Would you please become a volunteer driver?
We
ask the volunteers to drive at least 12 times per year.
Serving Our Seniors provides the vehicle. No holidays.
No weekends.
