VA Medical Foster Home Program
The Medical Foster Home
(MFH)
Program
at the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System
offers a “home-like” long-term care option
for Veterans seeking an alternative to
a nursing home placement or other
institutionalized setting. The program
partners with caregivers in the community who are at least
21 years old, financially stable, live in a home that they
own or rent, and have prior care-giving experience.
A foster care home that houses only veterans in the
state of Ohio does not have to be licensed by the state;
however, if a mixture of residents receive care, the home
must be state licensed. The program is meant to provide
a family home environment where a maximum of three
veterans can receive individualized care. The VA inspects
each home initially then annually, makes home visits, and
provides veterans with a professional home care team
that includes pharmacists, physicians, nurses, physical
therapists, dieticians, and social workers.
For the veteran, costs range from $1,500 to $3,000
depending on the level of care required and eligible
veterans can be assisted with applying for financial
resources from the Veterans Benefits Administration.
Before veterans can move into a MFH, they must be
enrolled in the VA health care system.
If you are interested in exploring the VA Medical Foster
Home Program as a placement option or are interested in
opening up your home to veterans in need, please contact

They Help Those They Don’t Even Know!
Since October 2014, Serving Our Seniors’ volunteers have given
their time to drive 217 people to health care appointments that
are out of town.
They make the time to help people that they don’t even know get
to appointments as close as Norwalk, Bellevue or Lorain; and
as far as the University of Toledo Medical Center and Cleveland
Clinic – even Ohio State University Medical Center.
We truly appreciate their generosity.
It is making Erie County
a Compassionate Community for Aging Independently.
