From the
Director
Happy New Year! Depending on how you define “senior citizen”, I am now one
of them. In December I turned 55 and you will read about me and my peers
choosing healthy living. In 2017 we are striving to fulfill our commitments to be
role models for achieving better health in later life.
Be sure to read through our Calendar of Events. We have so much to offer
those who are living with Alzheimer’s disease and those who want to know how
to help those affected. There are plenty of other events for those who want to be
wiser about aging well, while avoiding financial harm.
Will you do Serving Our Seniors a favor? Will you show your support for our
magazine by thanking an advertiser that appears in this issue? Tell them
that you saw their ad and that you appreciate receiving the magazine. The
advertisers pay for the printing and the mailing so that your magazine arrives
in your mailbox free of charge to you. I, for one, am very grateful for their
advertising support. I hope you are, too.
Enjoy,
Sue Daugherty

Volunteering for Meals on Wheels is true compassion in action.
Retirees who have their health are never too old to volunteer.
This group of altruistic retirees won’t let age keep them down.
Ned Reidy, 88,
“Basically, I started to volunteer because my
wife wanted me out of the house”, he said as he started to
laugh. When asked if he enjoys it, he was quick to respond,
“Oh yes. I’ve been doing it since 2004. I do enjoy it.”
Paul Fries, 84,
“I started volunteering for something to do,
because I am retired. I have been doing this for about three
or four years”.
Rita Ohlemacher, 85,
“One of my classmates got me
interested. All my life we did things like this to help other
people. I enjoy going to see everybody.”
Jim Morris, 90,
“I have heard so many good things about
Meals on Wheels. I thought I’d try it. I really enjoy it. I think
in so many cases, we are the only people some of the
clients ever see. So if I can put a little sunshine in their day,
I want to do that.”
Paul Hennessy,
93,
“I do this
because I have
free time. It
keeps me active
and I enjoy it.”
George Shaffter, 87,
I volunteer along with my wife. It’s
something that we like to do together.”
Ken Fultz, 86,
started volunteering 22 years ago. “I have a
wonderful route. It’s route #1. Those people are so nice to
me. It’s unbelievable.”
The meals are prepared at the Erie County Senior Center,
620 E. Water Street – Sandusky. Volunteers are needed 1
day per week. Volunteers aren’t expected to deliver on days
they feel unsafe due to winter weather conditions and will
be accommodated when time off is needed.
