Barb Hanck, the Director of Development
at Sandusky Goodwill, is a long distance
caregiver. She is the oldest of six siblings
and lives the farthest away. Her relationship
with her father, age 85, is like no other. Her
siblings tell her, “Dad will only listen to you.”
Her father is a stroke survivor – not a
quitter. He has paralysis from two strokes
and he is determined to maintain his
independence. With Barb’s help, concerns
about safety, meals, home maintenance,
transportation, insurance and finances get
managed.
She said, “My siblings, our spouses, kids,
grandkids and even the great-grandkids
have been enlisted for different tasks. We have great home health care
services. We installed a security system that allows us to
see how Dad is doing – remotely.”
“I used to think that 62 was a good age to retire. Not
any more…. I am planning to work till 70, and maybe
longer. The thought of stopping because I’ve reached a
certain age doesn’t really make sense for me. I started an
employee wellness program at Goodwill a few years ago
and we have a great competitive walking program. I feel
healthier now that I exercise regularly. I have too much
energy, too much creativity and too much interest in my
community to slow down.”
“There are a few things I’ve learned from helping my dad.
I do believe that when you turn 60, if your attorney or
doctor isn’t 10 years younger than you, make sure there
is a younger partner in the practice…. “I also think that it’s
wise to keep an open line of credit. No one will loan you
money without it and you should be prepared in case you
need it.”
Barb and her husband Don are enjoying a good life with
good health and a positive attitude about their age and
their future.
