You may have read about Carrie as the person who
feels for those, living in nursing homes, who feel
forgotten. She sends those individuals greeting cards.
This year, it was her turn to be the recipient of a little
kindness. It came in the form of Serving Our Seniors
Denture Project.
Carrie had been wearing the same dentures for 10
years. A few years ago, she dropped her bottom
denture and it broke in half. To fix them, she resorted
to super glue. This kept her from being able to bite
properly. “I had to be careful about how I chewed, to
keep the denture from breaking in half where I glued it.”
It made the lower part of her mouth painful and it made
chewing solid food difficult, too.
“I couldn’t chew meat and other food that was firm.
My friend would sometimes make me oatmeal-raisin
cookies. Before, I couldn’t chew the raisins. Now I can.”
She used to take the denture out of her mouth, to get
the relief she needed. She would
have sore spots where the denture
laid on her gum. “Sometimes I
just swallowed my food whole
and hoped I didn’t choke,” she
explained as she laughed.
In March 2016, she received a new set of dentures,
through Serving Our Seniors Denture Project. Although
her upper denture wasn’t broken, she needed a new
upper denture to have a proper bite. “Now I can’t stop
grinning,” she said.
Her advice to others - “If you need teeth, ask for help.
People can’t help you if they don’t know you need help.
Pride goeth before the fall. I think when people have
too much pride they suffer.”
Today, because of Serving Our Seniors Denture
Project, Carrie is free of mouth pain and she is able to
chew solid food, well, before swallowing.
