Middle School Student
Sees the “Older” Generation as COOL!
Ireland Bennett, age 13, is a “social entrepreneur”. She attends Briar
Middle School in Perkins and she is starting, on her own volition, an
“Intergenerational Pen Pals Project”
. She wants to do it herself
because she thinks “It would be cool.”
Since June 2016 she has been chipping away at coordinating her
intergenerational “Pen Pal Project”. She plans to implement it now that
school is back in session. Best of all, she plans to do this herself - from
start to finish! The service coordinators at Harborview and Viewpoint
Apartments are pairing up the middle school students with those age
60+, who are equally motivated to fulfill a pen pal writing commitment
throughout the entire school year of 2016/2017.
“We are taught how to write letters in school,” Ireland explained. “My
class was the last class to learn cursive writing in second and third
grade.” Although she admits when she writes, she normally prints, she
is looking forward to reading letters that are written in cursive.
She picked the 60+ age group for her project because “We know our
generation, but we don’t know about the older generation. I think it will
be cool for the two different generations to learn about each other. I
want to hear their stories.”
Social entrepreneurs, like Ireland Bennett, create quality of life. Her
project will produce more friendships, empathy and understanding
between people. These social qualities are priceless. Qualities
that can’t be bought, only inspired. At the end of the school year,
Serving Our Seniors will hold a celebration that brings together both
generations of pen pals, to meet in person for the first time, and
celebrate the kindness that each generation extended to one another.
