Elaine, (not her real name) an Erie County resident, has
been caring for her husband who has Alzheimer’s disease.
She has no family in the area and called Serving Our
Seniors to ask for help. Serving Our Seniors’ expertise is
not Alzheimer’s disease, but we do have a strong working
partnership with The Alzheimer’s Association - NW Ohio
Chapter. They are the experts!
Elaine took advantage of a “Chat with Brenda”
appointment, at Serving
Our Seniors office the third
Thursday of the month. It was
there that she met Brenda
Hendricks, a gerontologist,
who works for the Alzhiemer’s
Association- NW Ohio
Chapter, for an in-person care
consultation appointment.
According to Elaine, “Brenda
is so consoling to talk to. She
has all of the answers at her finger tips”.
It was because of Brenda that Elaine is helped through
the Area Office on Aging Caregiver Support Program.
They pay for a nurse’s aid from TLC Home Health
Agency to come to Elaine’s home to give her time to go
shopping and run errands.
“The hard part is not being able to leave my home”, said
Elaine. “Now I can.”
In December, Elaine started using the Alzheimer’s
Association’s “Care Consultation Program”. She talks to a
Care Consultant regularly, by phone. This gives the Care
Consultant the opportunity to talk with Elaine about: How to
communicate with someone who is experiencing memory
changes, legal and financial issues, offer tips on how to
address personal hygiene, home safety and
other concerns.
“I didn’t know about the different ways that
help is available,” said Elaine.
