Will the Medicare Part A & B Premiums and
Deductibles Increase for 2016?
Answer:
Provisions of the Bipartisan Budget Act signed
into law in November impact Medicare beneficiaries.
Part B PREMIUMS and DEDUCTIBLE
• The Part B annual deductible for all Part B
beneficiaries will be $166, up from $147 in 2015.
• The Part B premium will increase for some, but not
everyone. Social Security announced, there will be no
cost of living increase (COLA) for 2016, and by law,
most people paying for Part B will be “held harmless”
from any increase in 2016, and continue to pay the
premium of $104.90.
• Beneficiaries not subject to the hold harmless
provision, will pay $121.80.
• Those who enroll in Part B for the first time in 2016.
• Dual eligible beneficiaries, their
premium is paid by Medicaid.
• Those who pay an additional income-related premium.
• These groups account for 30% of the 52 million
enrollees in Medicare in 2016.
Part A PREMIUMS and DEDUCTIBLE
• The Part A deductible that beneficiaries will pay is
$1,288 in 2016. This increased from $1,260 in 2015.
The deductible is paid for each benefit period.
• The Part A premium for individuals that have fewer
than 40 quarters of coverage will be tiered, the full
premium will be $411 a month (increase $4 from
2015).
