Meet Jann Graham-Glann, PhD. She is a
native of North Carolina and has a PhD in
Theater and Music. She came to Bowling
Green State University for her Master’s
Degree and PhD in Theater. After
teaching at several universities she and
her husband, Frank Glann, PhD, moved
to Huron to teach theater at BGSU -
Firelands College, for over 40 years.
Today, she is the Director of Music at the
First Presbyterian Church in Huron. She
also works at Edison High School with
their spring musical.
Jann is a powerful volunteer. One of the projects she
has donated her time and talents to develop involves
removing the stigma of Alzheimer’s
disease. Since February 2015,
Jan has worked, each month, with
Brenda Hendricks, gerontologist, with
the Alzheimer’s Association – NW
Ohio. Together, they help Erie County
residents living with memory changes
by using “Theater Improv”.
Theater Improv, has been an adventure for Jann.
She has never used her theater skills to create fun
and enjoyable experiences for individuals living
with memory loss. What makes it unique is how it
includes the spouses/friends to participate, too.
She said, “I wasn’t sure what to expect, quite
frankly. But, I have found that whatever we can
do for other human beings is what we ought to be
doing.” Through Theater Improv,
everyone feels like they belong.
Jann, herself says, “I still don’t
know, when those who come in
with a partner, who is affected with
early memory loss”.
That is where the magic of theater
shows itself. People with an
Alzheimer’s type condition are
often treated differently when their
diagnosis is known. Theater Improv
levels the playing field. Everyone is treated the
same while fun and laughter dominates the
entire session.
“I come away from it feeling so good,” she said.
