Q: My wife died and I no longer drive. Can Serving Our
Seniors help me with transportation to get to the barber, the
store, the bank, etc…?
A: Yes. We know if a person has never
used public transportation before, they
are reluctant to try. Let us help you. Call
our office (419-624-1856 or 800-564-
1856). While you’re on the line, we will
make a 3-way call to Sandusky Transit
System and help you schedule your ride. We make it easy.

Q: I turn 65 years old on January 30th. Did I miss the
chance to get Medicare Part D, since I didn’t sign up
between Oct. 15th and Dec. 7th?
A: No. You can enroll in a Medicare
Part D plan 3 months before your 65th
birthday and up to 3 months after your
65th birthday. Call our office now to
schedule an appointment. It’s better to
do it sooner rather than later.

Q: My mother is showing signs of poor judgment and some
forgetfulness. I want to help her maintain her independence.
I don’t want to jump to the wrong conclusion and assume its
Alzheimer’s disease. What should I do?
A: It’s not always Alzheimer’s disease.
We advocate for a thorough assessment.
Begin by calling or writing a letter to her
doctor. Describe the changes you’re
seeing in your mother. Then make an
appointment for your mother to see her
doctor. Go to the appointment with her. Ask her doctor to
refer your mother to a Geriatric Assessment Center. The
assessments are performed by a “Geriatrician”- a physician
who specializes in treating older adults.
Medicare pays for a Geriatric Assessment. There is a
center at University Hospital in Beachwood and Cleveland
Clinic in Lakewood.
Next call Serving Our Seniors 419-624-1856 to make
an appointment with the Alzheimer’s Association’s
gerontologist, Brenda Hendricks. She comes to Serving
Our Seniors office the third Thursday of every month for
private appointments. She will talk with you one-on-one and
offer advice. She is very helpful.
Last, but not least, call the Alzheimer’s Association Helpline
1-800-272-3900. It’s an excellent source for information
and support.

Q: I need diabetes supplies and I can’t always afford my
co-pays. Is there help for someone like me?
A: We don’t have the medications, but we
do have free diabetes supplies – insulin
syringes, lancets, test strips, some new
glucometers, too. We have more insulin
syringes than we have storage space.

Q: Is there a program to help senior citizens afford products
like Depends? They are so expensive.
A: Serving Our Seniors receives donated
disposable undergarments, like Depends.
We also have pads that are inserted into
your underwear and disposable bed pads
to place on your mattress at night. They
are given to us by individuals from the
community. If we have your size you are
welcome to them.

Q: I think I might want to volunteer to drive for the Out of
Town Transportation Program, but not if I am going to be
asked to drive all the time. Can I just drive once or twice
per month?
A: Yes! Although we are in a serious
need for drivers, we will only call
volunteers on the days you tell us you
would like to be called to drive. We are
happy to respect your boundaries. Before
anyone can drive for us, they must have
zero points on their driver’s license; pass
a criminal background check and a driving assessment.
Serving Our Seniors’ will pay for these costs. Call and
ask for me (419-624-1856). I’ll explain the details.
