During January 1 – February 14, of each year, you
can leave your Medicare Advantage plan and return to
Original Medicare. If you use this election period to
disenroll from a Medicare Advantage plan, you are
eligible for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) to enroll
into a stand-alone Medicare Prescription Drug Plan (Part
D). This is also an opportunity to enroll in a stand-alone
Part D plan for those already not enrolled in a plan at
year end.
During the Medicare Advantage Disenrollment Period
(MADP) is an opportunity to enroll in Part D coverage,
for those who have not already enrolled in a plan.
Note: If you disenroll from your Medicare Advantage
Plan, federal law does not usually give you the right
to buy a supplemental plan. Ohio law provides you
the opportunity to apply for a supplemental plan any
time during the year. The supplemental plans help
pay for Original Medicare Part A and B deductibles
and coinsurances.

Answer:
It would be important to understand your
Medicare coverage to respond to this question.
a) Do you have Medicare as your Primary coverage
with a supplement? Actually, in Ohio, you can apply
to a supplemental plan anytime during the year.
b) Do you have a Medicare Advantage plan (MA)
with a private insurance? You can use the Medicare
Advantage Disenrollment Period (MADP), January
1st through February 14th, to switch to Original
Medicare and apply to a supplemental plan. You
would also need to enroll into a Medicare drug plan
(Part D) to complete your coverage.
To avoid any gap in coverage, you would disenroll
from your Medicare Advantage plan ONLY after you
have been approved by a supplemental plan.
