In an hour and a half hour, on June 11, 2015, 40 people
at Vermilion’s “North End” neighborhood showed up to
beautify public property that had become an eyesore and a
“weed patch”. Together they removed the weeds (including
poison ivy), roots, and scrub trees. Then they spread five
yards of wood chips to make a walkway that led to the
shoreline of Lake Erie. The next day, the City of Vermilion
came and hauled away the debris.
Judy Williams was the catalyst. She personally delivered
invitations asking neighbors to be part of a “neighborhood
project”. After the work was finished, everyone enjoyed
beer, wine and snacks on her deck; as they rested and
watched the sunset.
Mike Klein, who is a member of the Vermilion Tree
Commission, asked the power company that was trimming
trees in Vermilion to dump the wood chips at the work site.
“So we didn’t buy any mulch – it was all free”, said Mike.
Jayne Klein said, “I met some people that I didn’t know
before. Now that the path is wider and it has a view. We
walk down to watch the sun set. It’s just nice”.
Jerry Coghlan said, “It was fun. Short, but sweet. I really
enjoyed working on it. I’ve gone there a couple of times
to watch the meteor shower. I think this project definitely
opened up a lot of possibilities, because people now know
that it’s doable”.
Judy summed it up by saying, “Everyone worked hard –
physically hard!
We almost glow when we remember that
evening because we all share in that accomplishment. The
property belongs to the city, but it is in our neighborhood,
and we are proud of our group effort”.
We hope this story inspires you to get to know your
neighbors by doing good.
