Q: I received an official letter
notifying me that I have won
$1,327,940.00 dollars and I need
to mail in $12.99 to pay for the
issuance of Award. I sent in the
money, but haven’t heard anything.
Can you help me?
A: We can’t help you get your million dollars, because
it is a scam. We can report it to the US Senate
Committee on Aging - Fraud Hotline. This hotline does
not investigate reports. The information is shared with
federal agencies so they are alerted of the newest
trends and tactics used to steal from senior citizens.
Call our office at 419-624-1856 or 1-800-564-1856 and
we will help you file your report.
Whenever you are told you have to pay money to
collect the prize that you have won, that is your first
clue that it’s a scam.
Never pay any money for a
prize you have “won”. If you truly won it, then it’s
free!

Q: I have been diagnosed with
congestive heart failure and I have
a couple other health conditions. I
leave my doctor’s appointments as
uninformed as when I arrived. I don’t
really understand what my problem
is, but I’m too embarrassed to ask
my doctor to re-explain things to me.
A: You are not uncommon. In fact, you are probably
one of the majority of patients. The difference is that
you are admitting it. You should sign up for my course
“How to Be Your Own Health Care Advocate”. No tests
or quizzes. What you learn is basic information that
you will find useful as you age and need to manage
health conditions. We discuss many other health and
aging issues, too.

Successfully Aging On Kelleys Island
In the mid 1990s, Serving Our Seniors’ founders
identified social isolation as an issue affecting the
well-being of older adults living on Kelleys Island.
Serving Our Seniors worked to address this problem
by funding a rural lunch group on the island. It has
been meeting twice a week for the last 18 years.
Attendance is strong and people age 60 to 90+ years
old attend for food, fun and fellowship.
In October 2015 a member of Serving Our Seniors
Board of Trustees, Judy Williams, made a personal
visit to the island. While she was there she dropped
by the “Kelleys Island Lunch Group” at Bag the Moon.
She was surprised to see that there were 30 men and
women in attendance.
Instead of the usual $3.00 suggested donation, those
who attend donate $2.00 toward the cost of the meal.
An anonymous benefactor pays $1.00 per meal at the
restaurant. Serving Our Seniors funds the difference
to cover the full cost of the lunch. Everyone leaves a
$1.00 tip for the server(s).
Judy said, “We had mashed potatoes, sliced turkey,
gravy, carrots, a beverage of choice, and dessert.”
After lunch, several people took out cards to play Five
Crowns and two men challenged each other to a duel.
The duel was in the form of a squirt gun fight and Judy
got caught in the line of fire.
She said, “I had so much fun!”
As Kelleys Island resident, Drew Algase, told Judy,
“Growing older is mandatory; growing up is optional.”
