Spreading Kindness in Huron
Huron and Huron Township have made public proclamations asking their
citizens to do their part to make Huron/Huron Twp known for its culture of
kindness.
Woodlands Elementary School in Huron is doing its part, also. Three years
ago it accepted “Rachel’s Challenge”. Rachel Scott was the first person
killed at Columbine High School on April 20, 1999. Her acts of kindness
and compassion coupled with the contents of her six diaries have become
a life-changing school program.
Through Rachel’s Challenge, Woodlands students are taught how to create
an atmosphere of kindness and compassion and they are recognized for
their efforts. Faculty recognizes students for speaking and acting with
kindness towards others, looking for the best in others, choosing positive
influences – just like Rachel did. Those who exhibit these behaviors are
recognized as Student of the Month.
Students also “catch” other students performing acts of kindness. They
believe by recognizing the kindness of others it will start a chain reaction.
For each kind act observed, a student makes a chain link out of paper.
Woodlands’ goal is to make a chain of kindness that will stretch throughout
all of the hallways at Woodlands Elementary School.
