Bonnie Carroll remembers 7th grade. She had moved
and started junior high in a new school. “The other kids
had their friends. They weren’t looking to see what they
could do for somebody else. They weren’t being mean,
per se. I was just ignored,” she said.
In walked Lenore Kure, another
7th grader. When she saw
Bonnie sitting in the cafeteria
alone, crying, she invited her to
join her and her friends for lunch.
They ended up best friends for
life. “As a bonus, years later, I
also got her husband Chuck for
a friend,” Lenore said.
Bonnie believes it was a combination of Lenore’s
kindness and her adoptive father’s influence that led
her to become a social worker and later an adoptive
parent.
Lenore, pastor at First Congregational United Church
of Christ in Sandusky, said what she did for Bonnie
seemed like a little thing. “It was just in my heart. I
didn’t reach out with any Christian intention. Bonnie
was the
religious one
then. Not me.”
“It was huge
for me”,
said Bonnie.
“Lenore didn’t
think, ‘what
are my friends
going to think?
Are they going
to cut me out of the group? Are they going to talk?’”
That is still a social dynamic Lenore confronts at her
open and affirming church today. With the mission
“embracing all God’s children” they are not afraid
to welcome everyone, including those traditionally
rejected like gay, lesbian, bi-sexual and transgender
people. “ People do talk, and we don’t care. We know
we are doing what God wants us to do.”
Both ladies agree that kindness dwells within everyone.
It just needs to be nurtured so it can come out and
blossom.
