Erie County Chooses Healthy Living
IN LATER LIFE
The Erie County Health Department has a campaign
called “Erie County Chooses Healthy Living.” With
31% of Erie County projected to be age 60 or older
in three more years, Serving Our Seniors is a big
believer in this healthy living message.
To demonstrate our support for this healthy living
movement we recruited four people, in “later life”,
who made a resolution to live a healthier lifestyle in
2017. Serving Our Seniors Magazine will follow them
throughout the year to see how they are doing in their
quest to achieve better health as an “older” person.
Meet our 2017 healthy living role models:
Sandi Foster, 70,
is a
retired nurse. She believes
that acquiring knowledge
is great. But, if we do not
apply that knowledge…
What good is it? As a
former cardiac rehab
nurse, she has counseled
many people on healthy
eating and the importance
of regular exercise. “I, as well as most of us, know
what healthy living looks like. Doing it is another
story,” she said.
In 2017 Sandi has pledged, “I will not sit back and
get heavier or lazier. I have to get back to a healthy
lifestyle. I will eat more fruits and vegetables and less
processed carbohydrates. I will walk and/or participate
in water aerobics at least five times a week”.
Sandi knows the importance of a support team/
accountability partners to get to where we want to
go. She said, “With the help of my three ‘Healthy
Living’ partners (and my husband), I will get back to
the right choices. Wish us luck and join us on this
trip. We want everyone to be part of ‘Erie County
Chooses Healthy Living’.”
Unhealthy habits she is giving up in 2017:
Not
exercising regularly and eating too many carbs.
Healthy habits she is developing in 2017:
Walk
30 minutes 3-5 times per week and eat 4-5 fruits
and vegetables daily.
Rev. Herman Robinson,
68,
is motivated to choose
healthy living in 2017
because he is living to leave
a lasting legacy. Married
46 years to his wife, “Jess”
Robinson, they plan to work
on this goal together. He
is also the founder/CEO of
A.C.O.R.N.’s Ministry

Herm explains, “Life and circumstances have
compelled me to make healthier choices. I have always
thought about it, but a recent health crisis has forced
me to take this more in depth. I realized that my life
doesn’t just affect me. It affects other people who are
in my life.” Being part of
Erie County Chooses Healthy
Living
is what he calls “a legacy decision”.
Unhealthy habit he is giving up in 2017:
Eating
white bread and fried foods.
Healthy habit that he is developing in 2017:
Eating lean protein and continuing his cardiac rehab
exercise routine throughout 2017.
Willie McCarty, 61,
a military veteran, married
with nine children. He is a grandfather and a great-
grandfather. He is a smoker, in his normal weight
range and has had two heart attacks and three
strokes.
